人間は、最後の数字が「〜99円」の時は、その数字を無視する傾向にあります。これは左の数字効果というようなもので、例えば「1199円」という数字の場合、脳は「大体1200円」とは思わず、「1100いくらかだった」と思いがちなのだそうです。他の数字にも巧妙な効果があります。

最後の数字が「4」や「7」で終わっている、あまり目にしない価格だと、人はそれを適正価格なのだと思う傾向にあります。売り手が経費を厳密に計算し、売り手にも買い手にも校正な適正価格として決められた価格だと思えるのです。

ある会社では、他と差別化するために、一般的ではない金額（「9」や「0」を使わないような金額）を常に使うようにしているようです。「Lowe」や「The Home Depot」（アメリカのホームセンター）では、1.99ドルや299ドルという金額ではなく、1.74ドルや294ドルといった金額の商品が多くあります。

米大手スーパー「Walmart」では、ほとんどの金額が「8」で終わるようになっており、これは「9」よりも安い金額という意味でつけているようです。
